There is so much wood at my house, I have a storage unit to store the extra. I’m going to blame my husband for this one, because he also has likes to make projects from wood. We might not always store the wood how we should, but we do have some pretty good organizational systems to help us stay at least mostly organized. One of the most frustrating things for me is to not be able to find pieces of wood that I know I have. I’m going to share how I keep track of all the different wood in my shop. 

Glowforge Wood– Any time I get wood for my Glowforge, I first cut it down to size. I usually buy 4’x8′ sheets of plywood and cut them down to about 20″x12″ I also only use mdf and plywood for my Glowforge. This way I don’t have to store and try to figure out how to keep it organized. 

Sign Wood– My husband made this awesome wood storage system when our shop was just cluttered with wood. I’m always surprised by how much wood actually fits in the slots. For each slot, I organize by the size of the wood. I’m so thankful for this system, it has been a game changer!

Painted Signs– For my painted signs, I have pegboard in my work area and have placed the attachments so I can put painted signs on to dry. This way I can easily rotate from signs that are drying to signs that might need stenciled or touched up. 

Extra Signs– I have a couple different places that I store extra signs. I have an awesome shelf in a storage unit that I use at shows. I put any extra signs that I have or that I plan on taking to future events on that. I also have a shelf at home that I will place signs that I think will have a better chance of selling. 

Drying Stained Wood– In the shop, I also have a pegboard drying station. This is where I place signs that have been stained and need some time to dry. I have limited space, so the pegboard has been a great way to utilize the space that I have. 

Weather you are just starting out, or have limited space, there are some great ways to use the space you have well. Being organized always helps my making process go more smoothly. Hopefully this gives you some better ideas on how you can organize the wood in your space!
